Frequently Asked Questions

Physical therapy is a hands-on approach to medical treatment aimed at relieving pain and restoring function and mobility.  Physical therapists use specially designed manual treatments, exercises, and equipment appropriate for many types of patients.  The therapists at Lucas Therapies have experience with patients of all ages and stages of healing, and we would be happy to help you get back to your life!

Some physicians will recommend a specific physical therapy clinic, but you, the patient, have the right to choose where to seek care.  We accept virtually all major insurance carriers, except for Medicaid, and will verify your insurance benefits before your first appointment to ensure you are covered.

In the state of Virginia, we have a Direct Access law that was passed in 2015 to allow patients direct access to physical therapy services without a referral from a physician or other healthcare professional.  If you feel that you have a medical problem that may benefit from physical therapy you can be seen for up to 60 days of medically necessary treatment without a referral.  Most insurance carriers now allow direct access, but there are a few that still require a physician’s referral before they will pay for services.  Please call our office today and we will be happy to verify your individual insurance plan to determine whether you are eligible for direct access.

Scheduling is easy and we offer multiple locations and a variety of appointment times to accommodate you.  Complete the Request an Evaluation Form on this page to request an appointment online, or give us a call at 540-772-8022 and our friendly staff would be happy to assist you!

AQUATIC THERAPY PATIENTS:  If you are coming for aquatic therapy, you will probably not be getting into the pool on your first visit (unless otherwise told by your therapist).  For pool workouts you can wear a bathing suit or a comfortable shirt and shorts that you do not mind getting wet.  There are bathrooms for you to change before and after treatment.

Your first visit will last 45 minutes – 1 hour and will include a comprehensive evaluation.  Your physical therapist will discuss your medical history and your current issues, as well as assess your pain level and functional deficits.  After your evaluation you and your therapist will formulate a personalized treatment plan with goals, and a home exercise program if appropriate.  You will be an active participant in your recovery throughout your time at Lucas Therapies

In most cases your insurance plan covers all or part of your treatment.  Our office will be happy to assist in contacting your insurance company and verifying your benefit coverage based on your individual plan.

Common Insurance Questions

This is the amount your insurance has dictated you must pay out-of-pocket before they will start to pay.  For example, if your deductible is $1500 then your insurance will not pay anything until you have paid $1500 for services subject to the deductible (keep in mind that the deductible may not apply to every service you pay for).  Also, many plans still have a copay or co-insurance for each visit even after the deductible has been met.

At Lucas Therapies our policy is to collect towards your deductible up front, so we collect per the charges the therapist has put in for each visit.  We calculate your charges by using the allowed amounts for each charge per your insurance company. This amount may vary for each visit, as it depends on the charges put in by the therapist for the visit before.

A copay is a fixed amount that you must pay for a covered service, as decided by your health plan.  You usually need to pay this amount at the time of service, and the amount can vary for different plans and different types of services.  Remember that copay amounts are fixed, meaning you pay the same amount for each visit regardless of length.  In most cases, copayments go towards your deductible.

This is a percentage of the total allowed amount for a service that the policyholder is responsible for.  For instance, if you have a 20% coinsurance then your insurance company would pay 80% of the charges and you would be responsible for the remaining 20%.  The coinsurance amount may vary from visit to visit depending on what services you receive.
